Each November, Acadiana LifeStyle celebrates our anniversary. Twenty-nine – in people years, our hair isn’t quite graying yet and we’re still paying off student loans. It’s incredible to see each of the exciting transformations this publication has undergone. But one thing remains constant – Acadiana LifeStyle is a magazine for you. Take a look back at a few of our anniversary issues; reminisce about what was going on in our world, country, state and right here in Cajun Country.
In 1987, Ronald Reagan was President. A gallon of gas cost 89 cents. The U.S. Stock Market crashed. The Simpsons made their television debut. Beverly Hills Cop II earned $33,014,153 at the box office. “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi and “Faith” by George Michael were #1 on the Billboard Chart. Edwin Edwards was the Governor of Louisiana. “Neon Rain” by James Lee Burke was originally published.
In 1992, George H. W. Bush was President. A gallon of gas cost $1.05. Bill Clinton was elected President. Mafia boss John Gotti was sentenced to life in prison. AT&T released a videophone with a $1,499 price tag. Edwin Edwards succeeded Charles E. Roemer as the Governor of Louisiana. “Batman Returns” earned $45,687,711 at the box office. “I will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston and “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men were #1 on the Billboard Chart. Hurricane Andrew hit South Louisiana.
In 1997, Bill Clinton was President. A gallon of gas cost $1.22. Princess Diana died in a car crash. O.J. Simpson was found guilty. Dolly the Sheep was the first successful cloning. Mike Foster was the Governor of Louisiana. “Titanic” earned $658,672,302 at the box office. “Candle in the Wind” by Elton John was #1 on the Billboard Chart for 14 weeks. George Rodrigue was commissioned to paint Bill Clinton and Al Gore.
In 2002, George W. Bush was President. A gallon of gas cost $1.61. The country devastated by Sept. 11, George W. Bush delivered his famous Axis of Evil speech. Kelly Clarkson won the first American Idol. Mike Foster was the Governor of Louisiana. “Spiderman” earned $114,844,116 at the box office. “How You Remind Me” by Nickleback was #1 on the Billboard Chart. Hurricane Lili hit Louisiana.
In 2007, George W. Bush was President. A gallon of gas cost $3.38. Apple introduces the iPhone. Nancy Pelosi is elected as the first female Speaker. The final Harry Potter book is published. “Spiderman 3” earned $151,116,516 at the box office. “Umbrella” by Rihanna was #1 on the Billboard Chart. Kathleen Blanco is the Governor of Louisiana. LSU was the BCS National Champion.
In 2012, Barack Obama was President. A gallon of gas cost $3.91. The Curiosity Rover successfully landed on Mars. The summer Olympics were held in London. “The Avengers” earned $623,279,547 at the box office. “Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye was #1 on the Billboard Chart. Bobby Jindal was the Governor of Louisiana. Local artist Steve Riley, Wilson Savoy and Wayne Toups won Grammies for “The Band Courtbouillon.”
