LIBERTY’S TORCH By Elizabeth Mitchell, Atlantic Monthly Press, $27.00
Well now we can stop thanking the French for giving us the Statue of Liberty. They didn’t. It was essentially the gift of the French sculptor, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, who as a young man envisioned such a monument for the Suez Canal. When he failed to win that commission he sailed to America where he won the support of many, including President Grant and publisher Joseph Pulitzer who printed the names of all donors in his newspaper. He was also indebted to Gustave Eiffel, famous for his tower in Paris, who created the support structure for the statue.
