GONE GIRL By Gillian Flynn, Crown, $25.00
It’s Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary and she has disappeared. When police investigate and find traces of blood amid other signs of a struggle, they’re thinking murder and their obvious suspect is her husband Nick, who narrates the story. He offers details of his failing marriage, hiding the truth from police and Amy’s family. But Amy through her diary counters with her version of their marriage and feelings toward Nick. Who to believe? As pressure on Nick builds so do our allegiances and empathies as the twists and turns of the story keep us guessing right to its ingenious conclusion.
THE MONOGRAM MURDERS By Sophie Hanna, William Morrow, $25.99
Good news for fans of Agatha Christie and Hercule Poirot. They’re back. Sophie Hanna has, with the permission of Christie’s estate, recreated Poirot and his “little gray cells” just in time to solve the murders of three people in their separate rooms in a posh hotel. The three were known to each other, lived in the same town and had agreed to a triple suicide. Only Poirot with a little help from his new friend from Scotland Yard determines it’s murder and not the planned suicide. It’s genuine Poirot just as Christie might have written and one of the most intriguing cases he’s ever faced.
