Are You Happy?
By Art Suberbielle
Most of you have heard the news that Louisiana has 5 of the Top Ten Happiest Cities with metropolitan areas of less than 1 million. Lafayette tops the list and its metro area includes the 5 parishes served by Acadiana LifeStyle. The others are Houma, Shreveport-Bossier, Baton Rouge, and Alexandria.
So how did the rest of the country find out about our happiness? A couple of professors using data from a CDC survey called the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and other sources, came to this conclusion after adjusting the information for age, race, sex, and income. For once, the whiz kids got it right. This Harvard professor and one from Vancouver have confirmed what we all have known for years – Acadiana is a very special place to live.
No one will contest our claim to having the best food in the country. Now we can boast about our “happiness factor.” The study based its findings on demographics and income. While our per capita income in Acadiana is rising, we are certainly not at or near the highest levels in the country. Without a doubt, it is the people who live here that make the difference. For those of us who are natives, we often take the Cajun friendliness and warmth for granted. But ask a local resident who moved to Acadiana from out-of-state and you’ll get an entirely different view. Our culture is truly unique. Here neighbors have a genuine concern for each other. Human dignity and family values are held in high regard. Residents may work hard, but they always find time to enjoy leisure activities. Our lives are lived out passionately. Call it our Joie de Vivre.
Of course there’s always room for improvement. But let’s never lose sight of the fact that here in Acadiana we are particularly blessed with cups that are overflowing with happiness.
