Stuck With The Bill
At one time or another most of us have been stuck having to pay the bill. It might have been a lunch with casual friends that ended up on one check and handed to us, or having to pay more than our fair share of a group purchase.
Regardless how it happened, you can’t help but feel frustrated and dejected that you got stuck paying the bill. Brace yourself, my friends, because you are about to get stuck with another bill. This one comes under the disguise as the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare.
Recall the words of Nancy Pelosi, as she was advocating the passage of this legislation: “We must pass this bill so that you can find out what is in it.” The bill was enacted in March 2010, but most of the requirements will become effective Jan. 1, 2014. James Perez, a partner at DJW Insurance in New Iberia presented a very informative review of some of the provisions of Obamacare at a recent Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce breakfast.
This bill, in my opinion, infringes on the personal freedom of each and every American citizen. This bill includes both individual and employer mandates that spell out the requirements to purchase insurance and the penalties that will be assessed if coverage is not purchased. Yes, the government will actually collect monetary penalties from individuals as well as businesses for not carrying health care insurance to the extent that the government has dictated.
Even those who qualify for a subsidy for a portion of the premiums because of their income level will still have to pay a portion of the premium for their health insurance. There will also be a huge burden placed on businesses to pay a larger share of the health insurance cost for their employees.
In case you are wondering who will be enforcing the penalties for non-compliance with Obamacare, the answer is the IRS-yes, the Internal Revenue Service. This is the same group that has been targeting conservative groups. What’s more, the IRS is planning to hire at least 5,000 and up to 16,000 more agents to enforce the provisions of this bill. During the Congressional Hearing on the IRS Scandal on June 6, Representative Trey Gowdy remarked, “This entity has not only targeted citizens that it was supposed to serve, it has allowed itself to be used as a political tool. Not only does it have access to our financial information, it will soon have access to our health information.” This is due to one of the provisions of Obamacare that requires millions of Americans to provide their personal information to be used in developing a Federal Health Care Tax Database.
Undoubtedly, we are all stuck with The Bill. And it’s going to be a big bill that will keep on growing, year after year.
Is this what freedom in America has become in 2013?
What has happened to our personal freedom of choice?
Verse of the Month
“May God bless us still, that the ends of the earth may revere our God.”
